How I Straightened My Natural Hair

Before I get into how I went about rocking straight hair, I have a confession to make.  I’ve tried straightening my hair three times before and they were total fails!  My hair would look great once I was done but as the day went the ends began to frizz and by bedtime, I had an a frizz fro going on!  It was so frustrating, I waited awhile before trying it again.  This time I did a lot of things differently. Not only was I able to rock straight hair for more than a day, I was able to keep it that way for a week and a half!

  1. I started on freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Organix Argan Oil and Shea Butter shampoo and Moisture Restore Mask.
  2. I dried my curls  with an old t-shirt section keeping my hair in  four sections.
  3. Instead of loading my hair with product like I did the other times, I just applied a little bit of Cantu Shea Butter’s Leave-In Conditioning Cream.
  4. Starting with a  sections in the back, I used John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Heat Defeat Heat Protection Spray.  Love this stuff!
  5. Taking a small piece of hair, I used the tension method to blow dry.  All you do is pull your hair straight with one hand and move the blow dryer (set on low heat) slowly up and down until dry.   I don’t know why I haven’t used this method before!  It left my hair dry with very minimal frizz.  Granted it takes a lot longer to dry all this hair, but it was worth it in the end.
  6. Once that smaller section is dry, I twist it up and move on to the next one.

Now that my hair is all dry, twisted up and looking crazy, it’s time to flat iron. Normally I would just pass the iron twice and call it day.  However, this time I used the Chase method.

  1. I took down a twist and applied Smooth N Shine Polishing Silk ‘n Sleek Straighten Polisher as a heat protectant.
  2. I pass the flat iron through once.
  3. then I put a fine tooth comb into my hair about an inch from the root and place the flat iron right behind it.  Then I move both the comb and the flat iron down my hair.  The comb keeps the hair smooth so the flat iron can do its thing!

This method is great because it really got those pesky ends straight and the serum gave my hair great shine.

It took me about three hours from beginning to end but I loved how it turned out!  My hair had tons of volume and shine.  I could also appreciate the length I achieved since going natural.  Next task was making this hair last in this South Florida humidity.

  • I used Oil Moisture Restore Weightless Oil from Organix as my daily oil, applying from roots to ends. It kept my hair soft and shiny without weighing it down.
  •  At night, I put coconut oil on my ends to keep them smooth and hydrated since they are the first to frizz up on me.
  • To get my  hair to curl under without using a curling iron, I divided my hair in half and did too mini French rolls in the back before bed.  I just used hair pins to hold them in place and tied my hair down with a silk scarf.  In the morning, I carefully took them down, applied my oil, and I was good go!

  • For a little wave action, I divided my hair into two sections.  I took each half, did one big twist and wrapped it around into a mini bun, using pins to secure.  In the morning I took them down and had some nice, moisturized waves.
